What Does a Wedding DJ Actually Do Before the Wedding Day?

The visible part of a wedding DJ's job happens on one day. Most of the actual work happens before it.
Collecting the music direction
A DJ works with the couple ahead of time to gather favorite songs, the styles of music they like and dislike, and any do-not-plays. That input builds a set of adjustable song lists rather than a rigid, unchangeable playlist, something the DJ can lean on and adjust live once the reception is actually underway and the room's energy is visible.
Planning ceremony music separately
If the DJ is also covering ceremony audio, that music gets planned with its own attention: processional, recessional, any specific songs tied to the ceremony itself, distinct from the reception's music plan.
Coordinating with the run of show
The DJ works with the reception timeline directly, not just showing up with it in hand. That includes cueing the right song at the right moment, walkouts, first dance, any other formalities, and staying in sync with whoever else is managing the day's schedule.
Staying flexible right up to the day
Song changes, additions and do-not-play updates can typically still happen close to the wedding itself. A DJ who treats the music plan as fixed the moment it's first discussed isn't accounting for how much can shift in the months leading up to the day.
FAQ
How far in advance should I share my music preferences? Earlier is easier for planning, but most DJs, PYRE included, can accommodate changes and additions right up until the wedding.
Does the DJ build the whole reception timeline, or just work within it? Both, typically. The DJ coordinates directly with the run of show, cueing music to it rather than treating the schedule as someone else's problem.
What if I don't have strong music opinions? That's fine. General taste direction and a short do-not-play list are usually enough for an experienced DJ to build from.
PYRE's wedding DJs collect favorites, music styles and do-not-plays ahead of time, plan ceremony music separately, and coordinate directly with the day's run of show, cueing everything from walkouts to the first dance while staying flexible on song changes right up to the wedding.
